It is coming to that time of year where all those clever people who have studied so hard for 3 or even 4 years. Having taken their final exams and graduated from university.  You want to acknowledge their achievements but are wondering how to do it. If you have ever wondered why graduates throw their mortar boards up in the air after the ceremony well it stems back to the US navy. In 1912 the Navy gave their newly commissioned graduates their officers hats during the ceremony so they no longer required the midship hats they had been wearing for the past 4 years. To show how pleased they were they threw their old hats up in to the air. The practice stuck and soon spread to universities across the country.
